What Participants Say

Their Experiences, Their Words

RH

Rohana Hamid

Johor Bahru, 58 · Retired Teacher

"After my husband passed, I realised how little I understood about what we had together and what the law said about it. I enrolled in the introduction course six months later. The facilitator was patient with every question, and I never felt rushed. By the end, I had a clear sense of what I needed to do next. The advisor session helped me confirm a few things I had been uncertain about for years."

Lim Sook Ying

Kuala Lumpur, 52 · Business Owner

"I came to the workshop knowing almost nothing about EPF nominations or what would happen to my business if something happened to me. The worked examples they used were really close to situations I recognised. The document templates saved me a lot of time. The one thing I wished was that the online sessions had slightly smaller cohorts — it was good but a bit crowded. That said, both advisor consultations were excellent."

Johor Bahru, 61 · Civil Servant (Retired)

"My wife and I joined the Family Legacy Programme together. We had put off this conversation for years — it felt too final, somehow. The way the sessions were structured gave us the space to talk at our own pace. Having the shariah advisor present for the hibah discussion was something I had not expected and genuinely valued. The binder we received is something I look at regularly."

"I work long hours and had genuinely never sat down to think through what I had accumulated. The introductory course was manageable even with my schedule — one evening per week. What I appreciated most was that the facilitator never made me feel behind or foolish for not knowing things that I probably should have addressed years earlier. The printed glossary in Tamil transliteration was a small but thoughtful detail."

Chan Kah Meng

Petaling Jaya, 55 · Accountant

"As an accountant I understood the financial side of things fairly well but estate planning in Malaysia has its own layer of specificity that I had honestly avoided. The workshop covered EPF and insurance nominations in a way that was new even to me. I came away having changed three nominations I had not looked at in years. That alone made the programme worthwhile."

Norashikin Ibrahim

Johor Bahru, 63 · Homemaker

"My daughter encouraged me to enrol. I was hesitant at first — I thought it would be too technical or too legal for me to follow. It was neither. The language was very clear and the Bahasa Malaysia materials helped me check my understanding. The discussion on wasiat was something I had wanted to address for a long time, and now I have."

Case Studies

Three Family Stories

These composite accounts are drawn from common situations among our programme participants. Details have been generalised.

Case Study — Johor Bahru Family · Introduction Programme

A Couple With No Will and Two Properties

The Situation

A husband and wife in their late fifties owned two properties and a joint savings account. Neither had a will. The husband assumed things would pass to the wife automatically. This assumption turned out to be incorrect under Malaysian law.

What the Programme Helped With

The introduction course clarified how the Distribution Act 1958 applies to non-Muslim couples without wills. The advisor consultation helped them understand their specific situation and identify the steps needed to document their wishes properly.

What Changed

Within three months of completing the course, both had signed wills prepared by a licensed will-writer. The husband had also updated his EPF nomination. Both described the process as less complex than they had feared.

"We kept putting it off because it felt like a big, difficult thing. After the course it became clear that the first step was actually straightforward — we just hadn't taken it."

A Business Owner Who Had Never Looked at Her Nominations

The Situation

A 52-year-old business owner had a company, two insurance policies, an EPF account, and shares in a unit trust fund. Her insurance beneficiaries had not been updated in eleven years and still listed an ex-spouse. She was unaware this could not be changed simply by writing a new will.

What the Programme Helped With

The Practical Workshop's session on insurance nominations and EPF made the distinction clear — these assets pass according to nomination, not a will. The planner consultation helped her draft the correct forms for each policy and her EPF account.

What Changed

She updated all nomination records during the programme's duration. She also began the process of documenting her business succession intentions using the provided templates — something she had not previously considered in concrete terms.

Case Study — Johor Bahru · Family Legacy Programme

Three Siblings and an Inherited Property

The Situation

Three adult siblings shared an inherited property that had never been formally transferred into their names. Their late father had no will. Faraid applied, but none of them had a clear understanding of what that meant for ownership and future transfers.

What the Programme Helped With

The Family Legacy Programme sessions — attended by all three siblings together — gave them a shared framework for the conversation they had avoided for years. The shariah advisor clarified the Faraid distribution and the options available to them as co-inheritors.

What Changed

By the end of the six months, the family had appointed an administrator, agreed on the transfer approach, and each sibling had drafted their own wasiat to prevent the same situation repeating in the next generation.
